24 Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

A compact device for monitoring blood pressure continuously over 24 hours, delivering valuable data to physicians. ABPMs serve to identify hypertension or hypotension in individuals.

An ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM) is a lightweight device worn over 24 hours (and sometimes longer) that automatically measures your blood pressure at regular intervals while you carry on your usual day and night activities.

Why it’s used: It gives a more accurate and comprehensive picture of your blood pressure than a single “in-office” reading. It helps detect white-coat hypertension, masked hypertension or abnormal nighttime blood pressure patterns.

How long it takes: The device is set up in about 10 minutes at the clinic; then you wear it for 24 hours (or as ordered) before returning it.

How to prepare:

  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt that allows access to your upper arm cuff.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or contact sports while wearing the cuff.
  • Unless directed otherwise, you may eat, drink and move normally.
  • Showering is not allowed while wearing the device, as it must remain dry.

What to expect: A cuff will be applied to your upper arm and connected to a small recorder worn on your belt or strap. Throughout the monitoring period, the cuff will automatically inflate and record blood pressure readings while you go about your usual day and sleep. After the monitoring period, you return the device to the clinic.

Results & follow-up: The collected data is analysed, and a report is sent to your doctor to guide diagnosis and treatment of hypertension or other blood pressure-related conditions.
